5.2 Vectoring Principles

5.2.1 General

Radar vectoring shall be applied in a structured and controlled manner to maintain separation and ensure efficient traffic flow.

The Approach Controller shall apply vectoring proactively to prevent conflicts and support stable approaches.

5.2.2 Core Principles

The Approach Controller shall:

  • Plan ahead at all times
  • Issue clear and timely instructions
  • Avoid excessive or unnecessary heading changes
  • Maintain continuous situational awareness

Vectoring shall be smooth, predictable, and controlled.

5.2.3 Anticipation

The Approach Controller shall:

  • Predict aircraft trajectories and future positions
  • Identify potential conflicts in advance
  • Adjust sequencing before conflicts develop
  • Issue instructions early

Late or reactive vectoring increases workload and risk and shall be avoided.

5.2.4 Efficiency

The Approach Controller shall:

  • Minimise track miles where possible
  • Avoid sharp or excessive turns close to final approach
  • Use vectoring to support stable and continuous descent

Vectoring shall not introduce unnecessary manoeuvring.

5.2.5 Spacing and Timing

The Approach Controller shall:

  • Establish appropriate spacing between aircraft
  • Issue vectors early to maintain separation
  • Prevent compression of traffic on final approach
  • Adjust spacing using vectoring and speed control

5.2.6 Stability of Approach

The Approach Controller shall ensure that:

  • Aircraft are established on a stable final approach
  • Heading changes near final are minimised
  • Aircraft are correctly positioned for intercept

Unstable approaches shall be corrected early or a go-around shall be issued.

5.2.7 Limitations

The Approach Controller shall not:

  • Issue late or excessive heading changes
  • Vector aircraft in a manner that compromises separation
  • Create unstable approach profiles
  • Overcomplicate traffic with unnecessary instructions

5.2.8 Key Principle

Effective vectoring is proactive and controlled.

The Approach Controller shall:

  • Plan ahead
  • Act early
  • Maintain separation

Vectoring shall support safe, efficient, and predictable traffic flow at all times.
