05.3 Geometry & Intercepts
Training Objective
To understand the geometry of vectoring and how to achieve accurate intercepts.
Key Knowledge
- Intercept angles
- Closure rates
- Relative positioning
Operational Application
Controllers shall:
- Apply appropriate intercept angles
- Avoid overshoot
- Position aircraft efficiently
1. Overview
Vectoring requires an understanding of relative geometry between aircraft and desired tracks.
2. Core Content
2.1 Intercept Angles
- Small angles (20–30°) for gentle intercepts
- Larger angles for rapid positioning
2.2 Closure Rate
- Depends on speed and angle
- High closure requires early action
2.3 Overshoot Prevention
- Reduce intercept angle as aircraft approaches track
3. Procedures
3.1 Intercept Technique
- Assign initial intercept heading
- Adjust as required to capture track
4. Standards
- Intercepts shall be smooth and controlled
5. Notes
- Poor geometry leads to repeated corrections
