05.3 Geometry & Intercepts

Training Objective

To understand the geometry of vectoring and how to achieve accurate intercepts.

Key Knowledge

  • Intercept angles
  • Closure rates
  • Relative positioning

Operational Application

Controllers shall:

  • Apply appropriate intercept angles
  • Avoid overshoot
  • Position aircraft efficiently

1. Overview

Vectoring requires an understanding of relative geometry between aircraft and desired tracks.

2. Core Content

2.1 Intercept Angles

  • Small angles (20–30°) for gentle intercepts
  • Larger angles for rapid positioning

2.2 Closure Rate

  • Depends on speed and angle
  • High closure requires early action

2.3 Overshoot Prevention

  • Reduce intercept angle as aircraft approaches track

3. Procedures

3.1 Intercept Technique

  • Assign initial intercept heading
  • Adjust as required to capture track

4. Standards

  • Intercepts shall be smooth and controlled

5. Notes

  • Poor geometry leads to repeated corrections
