06.3 Descent Management

Training Objective

To manage aircraft descents in a safe and controlled manner.

Key Knowledge

  • Descent profiles
  • Timing of descent
  • Interaction with lower traffic

Operational Application

Controllers shall:

  • Issue descent instructions at appropriate time
  • Ensure no conflict with aircraft below
  • Sequence descending traffic effectively

1. Overview

Descent management involves controlling when and how aircraft descend to lower levels.

2. Core Content

2.1 Descent Profiles

  • Descent rates are generally higher than climb rates
  • Aircraft may require early descent planning

2.2 Traffic Below

  • Aircraft below must be protected at all times

2.3 Continuous Descent

  • Preferred for efficiency where possible

3. Procedures

3.1 Descent Clearance

  • "Descend FLXXX"
  • May include restrictions

4. Standards

  • Separation shall be maintained throughout descent

5. Notes

  • Late descent creates compression and workload
