05.4 Vectoring for Separation

Training Objective

To apply vectoring techniques to maintain or restore separation.

Key Knowledge

  • Lateral separation through headings
  • Conflict geometry
  • Timing of intervention

Operational Application

Controllers shall:

  • Use vectoring to resolve conflicts early
  • Apply sufficient heading change to ensure separation
  • Monitor until conflict is resolved

1. Overview

Vectoring is a primary method for resolving conflicts in radar environments.

2. Core Content

2.1 Conflict Resolution

  • Heading changes alter aircraft track
  • Separation is achieved through divergence

2.2 Timing

  • Early action reduces required deviation
  • Late action increases workload and risk

2.3 Magnitude of Turn

  • Must be sufficient to ensure separation
  • Minor corrections may be ineffective

3. Procedures

3.1 Application

  • Identify conflict
  • Issue heading instruction
  • Monitor until separation assured

4. Standards

  • Separation minima shall not be infringed

5. Notes

  • Insufficient turns are a common cause of loss of separation
